Description
Hardback. xvi,190pp. Poetry from Geoffrey Chaucer to Andrew Marvell with brief biography for each writer. Illustrations throughout including by George du Maurier, John Tenniel, etc., 32 illustrations in total. The design was by Edward Whymper under whose eye the illustrations were produced and who also produced the engravings; Edward Whymper was from a family of engravers and is best know as a climber who completed the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, the year after this volume was produced. All edges gilt. Full page illustrations with tissue guards. Attractively bound in maroon cloth with a heavy gilt Victorian design to boards incorporating names of the writers including Milton, Herbert, Spencer. Bevelled edges to the boards. Bound by Westleys of London.
